Tips for Accurate Results

Rules for Testing Cholesterol

  1. Testing cholesterol is not the same as testing glucose. Cholesterol testing requires more precise method of collecting blood.
  2. The amount of blood and the way it is obtained is critical for optimal accuracy for cholesterol testing.
  3. Test accuracy can degrade when exposed to light and/or humidity over time. Keep exposure time to under 1 minute.
  4. Test accuracy can be improved by taking the time to read the CardioChek manual and this document.

Common Mistakes

These are common mistakes made when testing cholesterol that reduce accuracy and are ranked in order of importance.

Mistake Solution
1. Using 1st drop of blood. Remove 1st drop of blood with a cloth then use 2nd drop for test.
2. Using "contaminated blood" from 1st drop of blood or not cleaning finger properly. Use 2nd drop of blood for the test. Always use an alcohol pad to clean finger prior to lancing.
3. Applying blood to test directly without using a capillary. Always use a capillary.
4. Using too little blood. Make sure blood reaches the indicator line on the capillary before performing test.
5. Squeezing blood from finger. It is better to massage the top of the hand then work the massage down.
6. Wating longer than 1 minute to apply blood from capillary to test strip. Don't wait longer than 1 minute to apply blood from capillary to test strip. This can degrade the sample and make the reading inaccurate.
7. Using an undersized (glucose) lancet. Cholesterol testing requires more blood than glucose testing. Not using enough blood can make the result inaccurate or create an error.
8. Lancing the tip of the finger. Always lance the side of the finger.
9. Allowing test strips to remain outside of vial for more than 1 minute before using. The same thing happens with the test strip as the blood when it is exposed for more than one minute prior to testing. Keep test strip in vial until ready to use and keep exposure to under 1 minute.
10. Letting test inside vial be exposed to light and humidity. Always keep the lid on the vial prior to and after using the test strips.
11. Forcing blood in the capillary. Allow blood drop to tangle over capillary.
12. Eating 12 hours prior to triglyceride testing. For accurate results, do not eat for 12 hours prior to testing triglyceride levels.
13. Misusing the capillary. Don't let blood remain in the capillary by failing to place finger over the "breath" hole of capillary.
14. Allowing capillary to make contact with the test strip. Place capillary over the test strip but do not allow it to come into contact with it.

Procedure

Procedure for properly handling blood to perform cholesterol testing that increases accuracy (organized in order of execution).

Step Common Mistake(s) Associated with Step
1. Read CardioChek manual See Rule 4
2. Fast for 12 hours only if you will be testing triglycerides to get opitmal accuracy. See Mistake 12
3. Do physical exercise to get "blood pumping" before lancing finger to get larger blood drop. See Mistakes 4 and 5
4. Thoroughly clean finger. Preferably with alcohol prep pad. See Mistake 2
5. Use properly sized lancet to ensure large enough blood drop; avoid undersized lancets usedonly for testing glucose. See Rule 2
See Mistakes 4 and 7
6. Lance finger on side of finger See Mistake 8
7. Use 2nd drop of blood from finger. Wipe 1st away with cloth See Mistakes 1 and 2
8. Use freely dangling drop of blood. See Mistakes 5 and 11
9. Place capillary under freely dangling blood drop See Mistakes 5 and 11
10. Use capillary filled with blood to indicator line See Mistake 4
11. Remove memo chip from vial and insert into top side of analyzer. See Mistakes 6, 9, and 10
12. Remove test strip from vial and slide into analyzer. See Mistakes 6, 9, and 10
13. Apply blood to test strip within 1 minute from removing from vial. See Mistakes 6, 9, and 10
14. Keep other tests inside vial with sealed lid and only open lid to remove test for immediate use. See Mistakes 6, 9, and 10
15. Drip blood being squeezed (or plunged) from capillary onto test strip without making contact. See Mistakes 3, 13, and 14
