Stopallergy
The Allergen Alert (originally the Allergen Detective) was developed by Jonathan A. Bernstein, MD, for Stopallergy. Stopallergy was founded by Dr. Bernstein in 1998 with the mission to:
1) Establish the medical professional as the recognized expert in the environmental control industry.
2) Ensure the thoroughness and scientific validity of manufacturer and clinical testing of environmental control products.
3) Educate medical professionals, their patients and the general public about the effectiveness of environmental control products.
4) Improve patients’ compliance with physician recommended environmental control products.
Stopallergy currently offers a complete line of allergen and irritant avoidance products in its catalog which is primarily distributed by allergists, on its website, and through its retail store in Cincinnati, Ohio.
The Kit
Allergen Alert is a home allergen detection kit that is an affordable and easy-to-use way to determine the presence and level of eight of the most common allergens found in homes. The Allergen Alert measures dust mite, cat, dog, cockroach, and four types of indoor mold. The test kit includes two specially designed dust collector traps (or “HEPA socks”*) for use with any vacuum hose attachment. After collecting dust samples from two separate areas of the house, the collector traps are sent postage-free to the laboratory for analysis. Within two weeks the patient will receive a personalized house dust analysis report.
The kit contains:
Allergen Alert is an important first step in assessing the extent of a patient’s exposure to the common indoor allergens. More importantly, knowing this information allows the user to make informed and effective avoidance measures.
*These HEPA socks are specified for use in collecting samples in the Center for Disease Control’s “Comprehensive Procedures for Collecting Environmental Samples for Culturing Bacillus anthracis” issued in response to the 2001 anthrax scares.
The Report
The personalized house dust analysis provides an easy-to-read, graphic report describing the significant characteristics of the allergens tested and illustrating the level of all eight allergens found in each dust sample collected. When appropriate, clinically and scientifically-tested steps for removing or reducing offending allergens are recommended in a logical, simple-to-follow format.
The Laboratory
The analyses are performed by the Allergy Laboratory, Division of Immunology/Allergy Section at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. The laboratory is staffed and supervised by highly qualified and experienced individuals in immunoassays, allergic disease, mycology, and indoor air pollution. The laboratory uses the latest testing methodologies available with thorough validation. It also follows the precepts laid out in the Clinical Laboratory Amendment of 1988 (CLIA ' 88) and those for good laboratory practice. The director of scientific affairs is active in numerous organizations in this field and is recognized as one of the world's experts in this area. The organization cooperates with several different Universities and maintains a very active leading research program in the area of indoor and outdoor air pollution. At the Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology in March 2002, the laboratory was recognized as a leader in antigen testing for its work with the Allergen Alert.
The Analsysis
All allergen levels are measured by an enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA) using a polyclonal antibody specific to the respective allergen. The allergens that are used in the analysis are detailed in the following table:
| World
Health Organization Designation |
Related Allergen |
Benefit of Test |
| Der f | Dust mite | Der f measures the dust mite species, Dermatophagoides farinae. Der f is found in most homes in the United States. |
| Bla g | German cockroach | Bla g measures the amount of German cockroach allergen in the home. The German cockroach is the most prevalent species found throughout the United States. |
| Can f | Dog | Can f measures the amount of dog allergen in the home. |
| Fel d | Cat | Fel d measures the amount of cat allergen in the home. |
| Alt a | Mold (alternaria) | Alt a measures the amount of Alternaria alternata, a common outdoor mold often found inside the home. |
| Asp f | Mold (aspergillus) | Asp f measures the amount of Aspergillus fumigatus, a common mold found inside and outside the home. |
| Pen n | Mold (penicillium) | Pen n measures the amount of Penicillium notatum, a common indoor mold. |
| Cla h | Mold (Cladosporium) | Cla h measures the amount of Cladosporium herbarum, a common outdoor mold also found inside the home. |
