Omron Healthcare, Inc. Sponsors 10,000 Step Study

April 11, 2003 – Vernon Hills, IL  Results from a 3-month and 44 patient study sponsored by Omron Healthcare, Inc. and conducted by DiabetesInControl.com concluded that people with diabetes who wear a pedometer and have a daily goal to become more active throughout the day will see improvements in blood pressure, weight loss, blood glucose, A1c, lipids, total cholesterol, LDL, HDL and Triglycerides levels.

DiabetesInControl.com enrolled diabetes educators, who in turn, signed up patients with diabetes to complete the 3-month study.  The study consisted of each patient receiving an Omron pedometer to monitor their steps and making a commitment to take 10,000 steps a day.

Each patient documented the number of steps walked each day and reported back to their educator each week with their total number of steps.  Forty-four patients completed the study with a total of over 30 million steps, which is equivalent to almost 15,000 miles.  The average weight loss was 4.1 lbs., and the average drop in blood pressure was –16 systolic / -4 diastolic.

If you're one of those people who believe that only vigorous exercise, such as jogging 2 miles counts toward fitness, you'd better think again.  A brisk walk can burn up to 100 calories per mile or 300 calories per hour.

By using an Omron pedometer, you'll be reminded to be more active throughout the day. The Omron pedometer is inexpensive, easy to use and available at many retail locations.
