A SIMPLE ONE-STEP TEST TO DETECT TOBACCO EXPOSURE
TobacAlert™ can help.....
protect pregnant women and their unborn babies
employers and insurance companies verify smoking status
TobacAlert™ from Nymox Corporation is a revolutionary new product in the fight against smoking. It is an inexpensive, accurate, easy-to-use method for measuring a person's exposure to tobacco smoke.
TobacAlert shows the level of nicotine exposure both in smokers and persons subjected to second-hand smoke. After much debate about second-hand smoke, it can now be scientifically measured and quantified, quickly and easily. TobacAlert is a simple test strip that does not require any instruments or special training for its use.
When you stop smoking, positive benefits occur almost immediately: Within 20 minutes, blood pressure, pulse rate and the temperature in your hands and feet return to normal,
Within 8 hours, the oxygen level in your blood increases and the carbon monoxide level decreases.
In 23 hours, your risk of heart attack begins to drop,
In 2 days, your nerve endings begin to grow and your sense of smell and taste improve,
In 3 days, breathing gets easier and lung capacity increases,
In 2 weeks to 3 months, circulation improves, walking becomes easier and lung function increases,
In 1 to 9 months, coughing, sinus congestion, fatigue, and shortness of breath decrease, cilia begin to regrow in the lungs reducing the risk of infection,
Within 3 to 4 years, the risk of cancers of the larynx and bladder decreases, and
Within 5 years, the risk of cancers of the esophagus and the mouth decreases.
Second-hand smoke: Two-thirds of the smoke from a burning cigarette goes into the air.
Second-hand smoke contains more hazardous substances than inhaled smoke: Twice as much tar and nicotine, Three times as much cancer-causing benzpyrene, Five times as much carbon monoxide and 50 times as much ammonia.
Approximate equivalencies: Two hours in a smoky bar or restaurant = smoking four cigarettes. 24 hours in the home of someone who smokes one pack a day = smoking three cigarettes. Eight hours in a smoky office = smoking six cigarettes.

BACKGROUND:
Tobacco use is the single most preventable cause of premature death today. Every year, smoking causes nearly a half-million premature deaths in the United States and an economic loss exceeding $150 billion.
Furthermore, second-hand smoke exposure has been linked to cancer, lung disease and increased risk of heart disease and stroke. Second-hand smoke also causes lower-respiratory tract infections and is linked to increased risk of ear infection, pneumonia, asthma attacks and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.
Clinical trials have shown TobacAlert is useful is measuring the effects of smoking and tobacco product use, as well as detecting second-hand smoke exposure.
In October, 2002, TobacAlert received clearance for medical use from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
