Colon Cancer Facts

The majority of colon cancers begin as benign polyps. These growths appear silently and often produce no symptoms except blood in the stool. This sign repeatedly goes unnoticed because the blood may not be visible to the human eye. By talking to your doctor and developing a regular screening regimen that includes Fecal Occult Blood Testing (chemically testing for hidden blood in your stool), you can stop colon cancer before it develops.

Fecal Occult Blood Testing
Detects Hidden Blood

Colon cancer facts, facts about colorectal cancerMedTek's Fecal Occult Blood Tests (FOBTs) are non-invasive (no examination), easy-to-use and low cost screening tools that detect what is sometimes your only warning sign of colon cancer – hidden blood. You can now have a choice of taking the test at your doctor's office or in the privacy of your home. Our home methods give you options. You don't have to worry about the messy task of retrieving a stool sample from the toilet. You won't find simpler and more convenient testing for colorectal cancer.

If you receive a positive result from your FOBT, you still may not have cancer. Other abnormalities such as ulcers, hemorrhoids, polyps, colitis, diverticulitis or fissures may produce blood in the stool. In any case, the results of your FOBT will help your doctor determine what type of follow-up or examination you will need.

The American Cancer Society recommends annual FOBT screening if you are over 50, even if you have no symptoms or history of the disease. They have good reason for their recommendation – regular screening with FOBTs has lowered colorectal cancer death rates by 33%.

If you are experiencing any of the colon cancer-related symptoms, you need to talk to your doctor about getting a diagnostic procedure called a colonoscopy. The American Cancer Society recommends that all people over 50 get a colonoscopy every ten years.

Although the disease is curable in its early stages, only one third of all people over 50 are being tested.
