COCAINE TEST
Cocaine Test is a field test reagent for the detection and identification of cocaine, crack and related narcotics. Cocaine Test utilizes a modified Scott reagent, which has been designed to reduce the number of false positives while at the same time, removing hazardous chemicals such as hydrochloric acid. The reagent has been packaged into an aerosol delivery system, which provides sensitivity to residue levels less than ten micrograms. Thus, Cocaine Test serves as an excellent detection tool. Testing is performed in the following manner:

• Slide one collection paper from the Grey dispenser (M#0530)
• The collection paper is sealed to prevent either pre- or cross contamination. Peel the protective silicon layer exposing the collection surface.  (Hint: Hold the paper between the thumb and forefinger, press fingers together while moving them in opposite directions. Silicon layer will separate). Be sure not to touch the exposed collection surface, thus, avoiding contamination. Note: the collection surface has a number of adhesive (shiny) dots, which aid in the collection process.
• Wipe the suspected area (e.g. objects, suspected paraphernalia, hands, etc.) or touch the collection paper to the suspected substance.
• Shake the Cocaine Test can before spraying.
• Spray the Cocaine Test onto the M#0530 collection paper from a distance of approximately 4 inches.
• Observe for an immediate color reaction. A positive Cocaine Test result is indicated by a turquoise blue colored stain on the collection paper, similar to the color of the Cocaine Test can label. Only immediate (one to two seconds) color reactions should be considered a positive reaction. If a positive reaction is obtained, the collection paper and untested evidence should be submitted to a forensic or qualified laboratory according to your particular agency's evidence handling protocol.

FOR EXAMPLE, THE FOLLOWING SUBSTANCES WILL SHOW A FALSE READING WHEN THE DETECT NOW IS APPLIED: FOR COCAINE OR CRACK TEST KIT; DIBUTACAINE, BUTACAINE, METHAPYRILENE. FOR MARIJUANA TEST KIT; NUTMEG OR HENNA.

GREAT CARE SHOULD BE TAKEN WHEN A TEST IS POSITIVE.  AS WITH LABORATORY TESTS DEFINITIVE DECISIONS SHOULD NOT BE BASED ON ANY SINGLE RESULT OR METHOD.  A POSITIVE RESULT DOES NOT MEAN THAT AN INDIVIDUAL IS USING COCAINE OR CRACK OR MARIJUANA, BUT COULD REFLECT THAT SUCH AN INDIVIDUAL MERELY HAS COME IN CONTACT WITH SUCH DRUGS OR OTHER REASONS FOR A FALSE POSITIVE READING. A DETECT NOW POSITIVE READING SHOULD NEVER BE USED AS THE SOLE BASIS FOR DETERMINING THE EXISTENCE OF ILLEGAL DRUGS.
