Meals Guide

 Don't just test. Test Smart™

Testing smart is twice as good around mealtime.

Test just before each meal to help you decide what to eat, how much to eat and, in some cases, how to adjust your medication. Try to aim for less than 110 mg/dL.

Test 2 hours after each meal to see if your blood sugar has evened out. You're looking for a result of less than 140 mg/dL.

These target ranges are not right for everyone. Check with your healthcare professional on what target range is best for you.

OneTouch® changes everything.

Testing smart before and after meals will help you discover that staying in range doesn't have to be boring or stop you from eating foods that you love.  You'll have new freedom to create exciting menus that leave you feeling good--because testing smart puts you in charge of what you eat.

TEST SMART™ TIPS

  • If you try new foods, test 2 hours after eating and write down the test results in your logbook to monitor the effects.
  • Check the Total Carbohydrate count on food labels of new foods when you plan meals.

Joanna had a big lunch. She tested 2 hours later and her result was high.

She realized that the spaghetti special had raised her blood sugar.

She made a note in her logbook.  Her portion of spaghetti must have had more carbohydrates than she expected.

Next week, she had a half order of pasta, some chicken, and a salad. 2 hours later her test result was right on target--and she could feel the difference.

Roger looked over all the different dishes at the potluck dinner before he picked up his plate.  What really caught his attention was the variety of desserts. To make sure he didn't end up with a high test result, he was careful to choose foods with a low carbohydrate count for his main course. That meant he could have a piece of his sister's famous chocolate cake and stay in range.

Paula almost fell asleep by the end of the movie.  As she left the theater, she remembered it had been 2 hours since her last meal. She tested in the ladies' room and got a high result.  She remembered the popcorn and candy they had shared before the movie. She took her friends for a brisk walk around the mall to lower her blood sugar level.* Soon she was laughing with everyone and having fun.

No matter how much sleep Frank got at night, he still needed a nap when he got home from work at 6 p.m. After talking to his healthcare professional, Frank began testing more often to see if his blood sugar level was related to feeling tired.

His logbook showed high results 2 hours after lunch, and slightly high results before dinner.

First, he reduced the carbohydrate content of lunch.  And instead of eating lunch at his desk, he walked to the park to eat and walked around for 20 minutes after eating. He felt the benefits:  he was more alert in the afternoon and right through the evening.

His test result before dinner was also in range.
