Exercise Guide

 Don't just test. Test Smart™

Exercise your right to feet good.

When you're active, your body uses up blood sugar. So you want to keep your blood sugar levels from dropping too low.* That's why it makes sense to test before, during, and 2 hours after exercise.

If your result is less than 100 mg/dL, eat at least one carbohydrate choice (15 grams of carbohydrate--for example, a glass of milk) before exercising.

If your result is over 250 mg/dL, take a rest, because, in this situation, exercising might make your blood sugar go even higher

If you are feeling out of sorts during exercise, consider testing. You may need a snack. Because a delayed result may occur, it may be a good idea to test before you go to bed on days that you exercise.

*Low blood sugar as a result of exercise is not a risk for every person with diabetes.

Exercise is a great solution if your blood sugar level is a little high.  And did you know that regular exercise may lessen the amount of medication you need?

TEST SMART™ TIPS

  • Talk to your healthcare professional before you start any exercise program.

  • Keep a snack of carbohydrates or glucose chew tabs with you.

  • Wear comfortable shoes, and look for reddened areas and blisters after exercise.

EXERCISE
Stay on top of lingering lows

When Kelly's husband met her at the mall he noticed that she was confused and forgetful. He asked a few questions and found out that she had tested after working out at the gym and her levels had been in range.  He wondered if she was experiencing a delayed response to her workout. He suggested another test since it had been 2 hours since she exercised.  Kelly tested and got a low result.  She drank some juice. Soon she was feeling like her old self.

EXERCISE
Need a fill-up between stops?

Result before exercise:  140 mg/dL Low result 1 hour later: 72 mg/dL

Rodney tested before he and his son got on their bikes.  They rode through a park and ran into some friends who were playing touch football. Rodney joined in and after a while the guys started kidding him about missing passes.  He was feeling a little shaky. He tested again and saw he was a little low.* He drank some juice and got his game--and his blood sugar--back for the rest of the afternoon.

*In this situation, test first if you are alert enough to do so.
