GeneTree DNA mtDNA HVR1/2 Sequence Analysis Home Page
(2 alleged maternally linked male or female individuals)

The number one reason people use mtDNA HVR1/2 Sequence Analysis, is to reconstruct family linked relationships, and prove or disprove genealogical research (ie. family trees). This test is used to support or disprove a direct female-to-female linkage between 2 male participants (male or female).

mtDNA sequencing provides researchers (i.e., forensic scientists, evolutionary biologists, genealogists, and anthropologists) a useful tool for studying human migration patterns, evolution, maternally linked relationships and identification.

There are 2 regions of the mtDNA that are of particular interest to researchers because of their variability among the different human populations. These regions are most commonly referred to as HVR1 and HVR2.

To characterize the HVR1 and HVR2 mtDNA pattern, the DNA is sequenced. GeneTree provides mtDNA sequence data and comparative analysis through examining these regions, and reporting the differences as compared to a standard, the Cambridge Reference Sequence.

GeneTree uses this service to facilitate in reconstructing family maternal-linked relationships, but the data can also be used to research your own mtDNA sequence. There are a number of publications that will assist you with researching your mtDNA profile and how it relates to published mtDNA migration patterns. Contact us if you are interested in receiving a list of publications that will assist you with your research.
