GeneTree DNA Paternity Test Instructions
- Please check the GeneTree kit to make sure that the correct numbers of
Swabs and Identification Envelopes have been supplied. There will be at least
two swabs and one envelope for every individual in the DNA test (unless
otherwise notified).
- Complete the Specimen Collection Information Form, Ordering Form,
Chain-of-Custody Form (optional), and read the Statement of Release
Agreement.
- Once you are ready to collect the specimens make sure that you have the
appropriately colored envelopes labeled. Prepare the envelopes to have the
swabs placed into them after collection. For example, the "blue"
envelope and the "blue" swabs should be used for the alleged
father in a paternity case, and the alleged father's name should be written
or typed in the "Swabs Envelope" section of the Specimen
Collection Information Form. Note: This labeling procedure is very important
- please take the time to appropriately identify and prepare the samples for
each individual (NOTE: IF a specimen collection facility is collecting the
samples, make certain to have the collection facility complete the
Chain-of-Custody Form).
Collecting the Specimens
NOTE: This is the most important step, and should be performed carefully in
order to collect a sufficient amount of material for the analysis. Poor
collection will result in re-collection.
- This is NOT a saliva test. Cheek cells are needed for testing.
- Open the appropriately colored swab receptacle. Remove one swab from its
receptacle. Scrape the swab inside the mouth horizontally (in a back and
forth motion) as you rotate the swab inside the cheek for 15 seconds.
- After collecting the cheek cells using the first swab, place the swab
directly into the colored envelope (do NOT place the swabs back in to the
plastic receptacle that they were packaged in). Repeat the collection
process with the other swabs on the same individual being tested.
- Keep the swabs in the appropriately colored (and labeled) envelope, and
seal it shut. NOTE: These samples are stable at room temperature for several
months. Repeat from step 3 for each of the other individuals being tested.
- Make sure that all the samples are clearly and appropriately labeled.
- Place all the colored envelopes containing the specimens into the
pre-labeled return envelope with all completed forms. Mail it back using the
self-addressed envelope.
