Of all tumor markers currently known, none has had as dramatic an impact in terms of organ specific detection of a disease as Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA). The American Cancer Society recommends men over fifty receive an annual serum PSA test along with a digital rectal exam (DRE). Men in high-risk groups, such as those with a family history of prostate cancer are advised to begin screening at an earlier age. Also, African-American males have been shown to develop prostate cancer at an earlier age, and annual screening is recommended starting at age forty.
