PSA4 FAQs

Q.    Why is a PSA test so important?

A.    The PSA test measures levels of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in the blood and is one of the best tools currently available for detecting prostate cancer in its earliest--and most curable--stages. Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers found in men in the United States. It occurs in approximately one out of ten men during their lifetime. Prostate cancer is more common in older men and is the second leading cause of cancer death in American men.

A PSA test is one of the best ways for a doctor to obtain a "snapshot" picture of a man's prostate health. Because PSA testing is often inconvenient, most men choose to put it off  until something goes wrong.

Q.   Why is the new BIOSAFE PSA4 so much better?

A.    BIOSAFE has introduced a new system designed to change the way PSA testing is done. BIOSAFE PSA4 is accurate, convenient, easy-to-use, and private. It allows the self-collection of a blood sample for laboratory analysis.

BIOSAFE PSA4 provides the accuracy and reliability of a laboratory test but eliminates the need to have blood drawn from the arm.

Q.    What exactly is PSA?

A.    PSA is a type of protein that is produced by the prostate gland and can be measured in a man's bloodstream. Since prostate cancer cells overproduce this protein, this may cause an elevation of PSA in the blood. PSA has been shown to be one of the most useful indicators of tumor growth in the prostate gland. Screening with a PSA blood test provides important advance information, which can be used as an aid in the early detection of prostate disease such as prostate cancer. Prompt detection of prostate cancer helps provide for better treatment and a greater potential for cure.

Q.    What makes BIOSAFE PSA4 different?

A.    BIOSAFE PSA4 provides the same clinical results that can be provided from a local laboratory, but without the inconvenience of keeping an appointment and the need to draw blood from the arm. It is a simple procedure that can either be done in the privacy and convenience of your own home or by a pharmacist or other health care professional. Three drops of blood are taken from a micro-nick of the finger, placed on a special collection card to dry, inserted into the special mailer provided, and then sent to BIOSAFE's CLIA-certified clinical laboratory in Chicago. Results are then promptly sent back to you and/or your health care professional. BIOSAFE PSA4 is accurate, private, convenient and easy-to-use.
