2. Which breathalyzer is right for me?

For Health Care Professionals, the Police Force and for high quality personal use, we recommend the AlcoMate Premium or AlcoMate Presige. For personal/private use, the AlcoHawk PRO, AlcoScan AL-5000, AlcoHawk Elite or AlcoHawk Precision, digital breathalyzer, is recommended for its reliability and accuracy. Although the AlcoScan AL-2500 is very convenient and easy to use, please keep in mind that these devices are meant for simple testing, and the lack of a mouthpiece can affect test results.

3. What is the BAC (blood alcohol concentration) limit for driving?

The legal limit for BAC while driving varies from state to state across the US, but most states use DUI / DWI limits of 0.08% to 0.10%.

4. Can I drive if my BAC is less than 0.08%?

No, we do not recommend driving with any intake of alcohol. There is no "safe" level of drinking before driving.

5. What is calibration/recalibration? Why do I need it?

Calibration of breathalyzers involves the manual setting of specific, known laboratory BAC samples against the readings
recognized by the device. The AlcoMate Prestige or Premium DO NOT require recalibration.

6. How do I know if I need recalibration?

If you notice that your breathalyzer is giving incorrect readings (usually a little high), please try the following:

Inhale fresh air into the device.
If the reading is 0.00%, the device should be functioning correctly.
If the reading is above 0.00%, you should send in the unit for recalibration.

6. What is a "Pre-Calibrated Replaceable Alcohol Sensor Module"?

One of the main problems with using breathalyzers in critical applications is that the alcohol sensor, no matter what type, requires periodic re-calibration. Unfortunately, the re-calibration process requires that the breathalyzer be physically mailed or taken to a professional service center, at which point the device must be evaluated and proper steps must be taken for calibration with an expensive simulator system. The process is costly for both consumer and service center, and the delay of processing and shipping back-and-forth can be quite a loss. The Pre-Calibrated Replaceable Alcohol Sensor Module can eliminate the delays and complications of re-calibration by allowing you to simply "snap out" an old module and "snap in" a new module. 7. How do I install a Pre-Calibrated Alcohol Sensor Module?

Please take the following steps to install a new sensor module:

For the AlcoScan AL3500 or AlcoScan AL3100, please contact us so that we can guide you through the process of replacing the pre-calibrated sensor.


1. Prepare your AlcoMate Prestige.	2. Use a flat, sharp tool to carefully open the top cover.	3. Lift the breath tube to access the sensor module.
4. Remove the breath tube. It should remove easily.	5. Carefully raise the sensor module from the body. Do NOT detach the cable from the body.	6. Remove the cable from the slot underneath the sensor module.
7. Prepare a new pre-calibrated sensor module.	8. Insert the cable into the new sensor. Make sure the blue strip is toward the sensor, as shown.	9. Replace the sensor module into its original position.
10. Re-attach the breath tube directly on to the sensor. Make sure the front opening is aligned.	11. Re-attach the cover on to the top of the body. It should snap in fairly easily.	12. Ready for Testing!

Tips

1. Cleanup / Maintenance

In order to extend the life of your breathalyzer, we recommend the following steps after each breath test:

Turn off power.
Blow fresh air into your device. (If possible, you should inhale fresh air into the device rather than using your breath. If you use your breath, make sure there are no contaminants such as food, drink or smoke.)

2. Important Reminders

The oxide semiconductor sensors used for alcohol detection measure BAC by the buildup of substance on the sensor surface. Because of this, you should avoid the following:

Wait at least 30 minutes after eating, drinking or smoking before conducting a breath test.
Some common household products, such as alcohol-based mouthwash, can significantly affect test results. Please allow ample time before testing.
Some medical conditions, such as diabetes or related internal organ ailments, may affect test results.
