CholesTrak® & Cholesterol FAQs

Answers To Your Questions About Cholesterol & CholesTrak(R) Home Cholesterol Test

Understanding Your Test Result

The National Cholesterol Education Program has divided cholesterol readings into three groups: desirable, borderline-high and high. Your reading from the CholesTrak(R) will place you in one of these groups.

Less than 200 mg/dL-Desirable Group

Based upon your cholesterol level, you are most likely at low risk for heart disease. A low-fat diet and exercise program will help you maintain this healthy level. If you have no other risk factors, you may repeat the screening in 12 months.

If your result is between 190 and 199, your cholesterol level is close to the next group. If you have other risk factors for heart disease, you should talk with your doctor. You may also retest with the CholesTrak(R) within one to eight weeks to confirm that your result is within the desirable range.

200-239 mg/dL--Borderline-High Group

You may be at increased risk for heart disease. You should talk with your doctor. If your level is between 200 and 239, you may be in a high-risk group and you should talk with your doctor.

240 mg/dL--High Group

You may be at greater risk for heart disease, whether or not you have any other risk factors. You should see your doctor for advice.

If you have any questions about your cholesterol result or the risk factors, consult your doctor.

Any one cholesterol reading can never be thought of as final because cholesterol levels change from day to day. Also, cholesterol may change in response to several things. For example, your reading may change after weight loss, while you are under stress, and during illness and pregnancy. All cholesterol tests will be affected, including those done by your doctor. Because of the changes in test results, The National Cholesterol Education Program recommends averaging two to three cholesterol results in order to check your cholesterol level most accurately. However, for screening purposes, a single CholesTrak(R) result will give you enough information to suggest whether you may have a problem.

Heart Disease Risk Factors

Cholesterol is only one factor that leads to heart disease. The other risk factors are listed below. Your doctor can help you to understand your risk for heart disease by taking into account these other factors along with your cholesterol level. The risk for heart disease may be reduced by lowering high cholesterol. Losing weight, controlling high blood pressure and not smoking may also lower heart disease risk.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is cholesterol?

A. Cholesterol is naturally produced by your liver and helps carry fat to parts of your body that need it for energy and repairs. When your cholesterol rises above the desirable level, it may build up in your body and may put you at increased risk for heart disease or stroke. Cholesterol levels can be high because of your diet, the amount of exercise you get, and your family history.

Q. Why is cholesterol important?

A. High cholesterol is one of the main risk factors for coronary heart disease that you can control. A risk factor is a habit, trait or condition in a person that may cause a greater chance of developing a disease. Other risk factors for heart disease that you can control are high blood pressure, cigarette smoking, being overweight and not exercising. Heart disease risk factors that you cannot control include diabetes, being male, or having a family history of heart disease. The National Cholesterol Education Program recommends that all adults age 20 and over have their cholesterol measured.

Q. What if my cholesterol reading is high?

A. If you have concerns about your result, it is best to call your doctor. However, remember these important points.

Q. How accurate is the CholesTrak (R) Cholesterol Test?

A. The CholesTrak(R) is just as accurate as tests used by the doctors and medical labs. In fact, a number of doctors use this same test in their offices. The CholesTrak(R) was evaluated in consumer studies throughout the US with over 400 people. When the instructions were followed carefully and all the steps were performed correctly, the accuracy, on the average, was 97%.

Q. What can I do to insure I'll get an accurate reading with the CholesTrak(R)?

A. Read all the directions before you begin and follow them carefully. Be sure to:

Q.  What can I do to make drawing the blood easier?

Q.  What does the purple color in the O.K. indicator and the green color in the END indicator mean?

A. The purple color means that the test has begun to work. The green color means that the test is done and you can now read the test device and use the Result Chart. Remember, only the END indicator turns green. The peak does not turn green. If you do not see color changes, call the CholesTrak(R) Help Line.

Q.  Can both indicators change color without giving me a correct reading?

A. Yes, both indicators may still work even if you did not follow the directions exactly. A false result may occur if:

If you do not see color changes, call the CholesTrak(R) Help Line.

Q.  Do I need to fast before I take the test or perform it at a specific time of day?

A. No. You can test yourself at any time, so fasting is not necessary. If you repeat the test, try to do so under the same conditions.

Q. What should I do if my test device reading is above or below the limits of the Result Chart?

A. If your test device reading is not on the Chart, call the CholesTrak(R) Help Line or call your doctor.

Q. If I choose to repeat the test, what does it mean if my cholesterol level is different?

A. Cholesterol levels can vary day to day within each person, so you should average your results.

Q. From one CholesTrak(R) test result, is there a chance I may be placed in the wrong cholesterol group--for example, Borderline High instead of High Risk?

A. Yes, especially if your result places you on the border of two groups. Because cholesterol does vary from day to day, the National Cholesterol Education Program recommends that at least two results be averaged before someone is classified. For example, in our consumer studies, where only one test was done, the CholesTrak(R) placed 13% of the people in a lower group than the laboratory test and 8% of the people in a higher group than the laboratory test. These results are similar to results from other studies where only one test was done.

Q.  Will common foods, alcohol or medication affect my test result?

A. Generally, NO. Most substances will not interfere with the test. However, you should not perform the test within a four-hour period if you have taken 500 mg or more of Vitamin C, or a standard dose of acetaminophen (e.g., Tylenol) or Naproxen. This could cause a falsely low result.
